Description

Pl. III of the part on glass windows in the ‘Observations Concerning Ottoman Ornamentation’ (‘Bemerkungen zur Osmanischen Ornamentation. Glasscheiben’ / ‘Notices sur l’ornementation ottomane. Vitraux’) in Marie de Launay, Die Ottomanische Baukunst / L’Architecture ottomane / Uṣūl-i Miʿmāriyye-i ʿUsmaniyye, Istanbul: Imprimerie et lithographie centrales (1873). This is a monochrome print based on a drawing by Bogos Şaşiyan. It shows two stucco and glass windows with ogee archs. The explanation of the plates locates the windows to Bursa.

The stucco is represented by drawn outlines, and three-dimensionality is indicated by thicker black lines. Yet this shading is not executed rightly, so it is not possible to distinguish between the different surface layers. The hatched parts represent depict coloured glass panes.
The window on the left has an outer band structured by alternating oval and square openings and an elongated cartouche in the lower section. The central area is filled with intersecting curlicues. They are arranged in eight pairs and placed in four rows.
The outer band of the window on the right is constituted by repeating squares, each showing four triangle-shaped perforations. Its centre is defined by openings in the form of stylized curvilinear tendrils with split-palmette leaves. In the background, the stucco surface is perforated with small holes that also contain pieces of glass, as the hatched areas indicate.

History

Research

The caption gives no information on the dating of this window, unlike the windows in pl. I, which are defined as modern or antique (IG_388).
The floral elements of stylized curvilinear tendrils with half-palmettes seen in the window on the right can be found in many Ottoman stucco and glass windows, in depictions of windows in the Süleymaniye Camii (Süleymaniye Mosque) in Istanbul (IG_234) and the Yeşil Türbe (Green Tomb) in Bursa (IG_245, IG_250), or in the depictions of some of the windows in the dome of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem by Ernest Tatham Richmond in his The Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1924, fig. 67). The stucco and glass windows presented by the Ottomans in the Pavillon du Bosphore (IG_109) and the Ottoman Mosque (IG_108) at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1867 were also of this typology.
The type with intersecting curlicues in pairs and arranged in rows is represented by several stucco and glass windows in Western collections (IG_10, IG_11, IG_41, IG_169, IG_254, IG_257). However, the geographical provenance of these specimens is Egypt, not Bursa, as with the window shown on the left of this illustration.
