History

Research

This auction catalogue is an important source for showing that after world’s fairs, architectural fragments of national pavilions, and in particular stucco and glass windows, were offered for public sale. These fragments are described in the catalogue as decorations and art materials used in the construction of the Ottoman Empire’s buildings on the Champ de Mars and attributed to the architect of the Ottoman pavilions, Léon Parvillée (‘Matériaux d’Art ayant servi à la construction des Édifices de l’Empire Ottoman au Champ-de-Mars. [Décorations de M. Léon Parvillée.]’, Baudry, 1867, p. 7). The mosque windows are described as mosaics of coloured glass in sculpted relief ornaments. Reference is further made to the very similar windows of the Pavillon du Bosphore (IG_109), another Ottoman pavilion, at the 1867 Exposition Universelle in Paris (‘Mosquée. Vitraux. Mosaïques de verres de couleur dans des ornements sculptés en relief, semblables à ceux du Kiosque du Bosphore.’ Baudry, 1867, p. 8). The stucco and glass windows on sale were documented photographically when installed in the Ottoman Mosque at the Exposition Universelle (IG_108); their fate after the auction is unknown.
