Iconography

Description

This plan was drawn by František Schmoranz for the execution of the stucco and glass windows of the Egyptian pavilion’s eastern minaret wing at the Vienna world’s fair. Besides a frontal view, it includes an elevation and the layout with measurements.
The window has a rectangular plate topped by a semi-round plate with a pointed arch. The central surface is filled with an intersecting pattern of eight octagons with inscribed circles around a twenty-four-petal flower with the outline of an eight-pointed star and framed by a band with wavy lines.

History

Research

The use of coloured glass within the stucco grille is mentioned in a newspaper article on the minaret wing of the Egyptian pavilion. The author perceived the aesthetic effect of the windows with its ‘tropical plant decoration’ on the corridor as picturesque and seductive.

The window’s stucco lattice is an exact copy of a window drawn by Schmoranz in 1871 in Cairo in the mausoleum of the Qalawun funerary complex (built in 1284–1285) (IG_411). The only adjustment Schmoranz made was to the outline, giving the windows for Vienna a pointed arch. Photographs of the Egyptian pavilion at the Vienna world’s fair document that three mullioned windows of this design were used on both the front and the back of the minaret annex (see for example IG_458).
