Iconography

Description

This photograph shows the mosque with dome and its minaret, as well as the Arab dwelling (Arabisches Wohnhaus) of the Egyptian building group at the Vienna world’s fair in 1873 by the architect František Schmoranz. The photograph demonstrates that the stucco and glass window, employed in various shapes and forms, was a central element.

History

Research

On the mosque’s frontal façade three pairs of mullioned windows, each topped by an oculus, can be seen. The design of the stucco lattice is not clearly visible. However, a central row of four flower like shapes, each encircled and adjoined by the flower motif in cut-off form, is recognizable. Although, it is not the exact same pattern, the stucco lattices are very similar to the ones of the minaret wing, with a pattern of flowers in a star shape surrounded by perforated circles (IG_412, IG_458). Those windows’ stucco lattices are exact copies of a stucco window in the mausoleum in the Qalawun funerary complex (built in 1284–1285) drawn by František Schmoranz in 1871 in Cairo (IG_411). While the replicated mullioned windows of the minaret wing are not topped by an oculus as the original window in the Qalawun funerary complex, the replica windows of the mosque refer to the original window by including the oculus.
The usage of coloured glass within the stucco lattice is mentioned in a newspaper article about the so-called ‘Oriental Quarter’ at the Vienna world’s fair. The unknown author describes the windows in the Egyptian mosque’s high galleries around the hall as filled with a delicate ‘plaster arabesque’ with small pieces of glass that only sparsely let in the light (Skizzen von der Weltausstellung VIII. Im orientalischen Viertel. 2, 1873, p. 2).

The upper windows above the mashrabiyya oriels in the Arab dwelling are stucco and glass windows as well. Carl von Vincenti describes them in a newspaper article as coloured glass laid into ‘plaster arabesques’. According to Vincenti, this type of window was called ‘Karamin’, and the high chambers of the Egyptian pavilion owed their very peculiarly pleasant twilight to them. (Vincenti, 1873, p. 1995). Photographs of models for the Egyptian pavilion’s décor show the stucco lattices used in the single (IG_423) and triple (IG_422) upper windows of the Arab dwelling.
